Re-Imagine Opera Challenge

Re-Imagine Opera Challenge

THANK YOU for helping BLO meet the 2009-2010 Season Re-Imagine Opera Challenge!

Many gifts – from new and longtime opera supporters alike – combined to meet the Challenge goal of $150,000. It was then matched dollar-for-dollar by our Board of Directors.

The Challenge celebrated our first ever Opera Annex production, Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, presented in February at The Park Plaza Castle.  Your gifts helped BLO:

  • Re-Imagine opera:  Soprano Kathryn Skemp, Flora in The Turn of the Screw, said of her Opera Annex experience, “It’s really exciting for us as performers too to be able to experiment and do something new; and I think the audience will go away talking and asking questions and having to think more deeply about what they saw.”
  • In new spaces:  The Boston Globe called The Castle “an inspired choice.”
  • For new audiences:  One-third of our audience was brand new – this was their first BLO opera!

The excitement continues this season as we re-imagine The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts in February 2011.  It will include the world premiere of a specially commissioned prologue.
