Shrestinian Award

The Stephen Shrestinian Award for Excellence supports the professional development of young artists and honors a young singer whose talent enriched our productions for several seasons.

Stephen was a member of BLO’s professional chorus and sang supporting roles. A gifted musician and a born performer, he passed away suddenly in 1996 at the age of 29. The Stephen Shrestinian Award of Excellence commemorates his passionate love for opera and his exceptional performance skills. The annual cash award is given to a member of the Boston Lyric Opera chorus who has demonstrated exceptional artistic growth and shown great promise for continued achievement. The award will be used to support continued professional development and training such as taking a movement, dance or acting class; coaching a new role; or paying a portion of graduate school tuition.

Ms. Hansen made her principal role debut with BLO last November as Frasquita (standing in green dress) in Carmen. Prior to that appearance, she performed with BLO’s chorus in five mainstage productions, and sang the roles of First Lady and Queen of the Night throughout New England in the 2005 BLO Opera for Young Audiences production of The Magic Flute.
