Boston Lyric Opera and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston present the Signature Series, a lively one-hour exploration of the operas in BLO’s Season. Each program in the Series focuses on one opera and employs a different art form including film, visual arts, theater and music to highlight a theme in the opera.
We hope you’ll join us for:
"Vissi d’arte," La Tosca, and Sarah Bernhardt
"I live for art" The fascinating, glamorous and appropriately dramatic life of the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt told through her letters, diaries, photographs, and recordings of her own voice. Arias from operas based on plays that provided her with her most famous roles—Tosca, Ernani, Cleopatre, Le Cid and, yes, Hamlet—complete a picture of this most “operatic” of actresses. Opera legend Joyce Castle will be joined by soprano Meredith Hansen for this theatrical and musical look at the Puccini opera and the “Divine Sarah.”

“Rehearsal at Theresienstadt, 1944”
Rising out of the very depths and horrifying moral chaos of World War II, The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits is both a biting meditation on the fragility and brutality of existence and a wry and ironic celebration of life's purposes. A look at the tragic performance history of the opera and its subsequent reverberations—illustrated by photographs, some of the compelling visual art created at the camp, and music from the opera itself, other compositions of Ullmann and an excerpt from Richard Beaudoin's commissioned piece to be performed with Emperor. He will be joined by members of the BLO creative team and cast members.
