The mission of Opera New England (ONE), Boston Lyric Opera’s education and community programs division, is to engage and educate people of all ages about opera. ONE helps to bring inspirational and often first-time experiences to many who might not otherwise have such exposure to opera, and in some cases the arts altogether.
Each year, ONE reaches 25,000 students, educators, and families across New England through a traveling production, in-school previews and study guides. ONE travels to dozens of schools, theaters and community centers every spring with a fully staged, one-hour English version of a popular opera for the whole family to enjoy.
By reaching out to schools and families in diverse and often ignored communities, ONE makes opera accessible and available to people of all backgrounds and provides role models for children with its inspirational, multi-cultural performers. It helps to fill the gap created by cuts to music and arts education and offers young people and families access to stimulating and interactive experiences away from the rigors of the standard educational environment.
