ANNOUNCING BOSTON LYRIC OPERA’S SECOND ANNUAL ARIA CONTEST FOR TEENS

SEEKING TALENTED TEENS TO COMPETE!

Are you a Boston-area teen who sings or plays an instrument? Want a chance to perform on one of Boston’s historic stages for a shot at a cash prize? All high school students ages 13-17 are invited to submit a video to BLO of their performance or interpretation of one of 14 preselected arias. Creativity is strongly encouraged! Think you and your friends can perform an aria in a jazz, rap, R&B, country, pop, or other style of music? Show us what you’ve got!

Up to five finalists/groups will be invited to perform at BLO’s Open House at the Shubert Theatre in Boston on November 6, 2010. The performance will be hosted by acclaimed arts and entertainment critic Joyce Kulhawik, and will be judged by a panel of professionals from the Boston music community.

The winning performance will be announced that day and will receive a $1,000 FIRST PRIZE ($2,000 for groups of three or more)! Second prize is $500 ($1,000 for groups of three or more). Third prize is $250 ($500 for groups of three or more).

Boston Lyric Opera Aria Contest 2009 Finalists (left to right) David Tackeff, Alexandra Selawsky-Group and Ariel Galford share the spotlight with emcee Joyce Kulhawik and BLO’s General & Artistic Director Esther Nelson at BLO’s 2009 Open House. Ms. Selawsky-Group, who won First Prize at last year’s contest, stated, "It was great to be able to sing in that beautiful-sounding space. I was completely in shock at winning. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before."
Submission deadline October 5th!

NOT AN OPERA SINGER? THAT’S OKAY! All submissions are welcome, including instrumental interpretations of an aria. Need some inspiration? Here are some examples of non-traditional interpretations:
