Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) is seeking applications for a Development Intern starting summer 2010 and running for up to 12 weeks, approximately 20-25 hours per week. Intern will report to the Annual Fund Manager and work on projects with all development staff. This is a comprehensive internship with opportunities for learning and experience in a wide variety of development disciplines in support of BLO’s 2010-2011 Season. There may be an opportunity to renew the internship for Fall 2010.
Assignments will include:
Annual Fund & Major Gifts
- Assisting with direct mail campaign planning including vendor and price comparisons, package design ideas, and creative tactics
- Researching donors and creating donor profiles
- Editing and drafting development content for BLO’s website
- Researching other opera companies’ web sites and identifying best practices for BLO consideration
- Updating central files of arts organizations and opera companies
- Updating donor database
Institutional Giving
- Researching potential foundation and corporate supporters for BLO
- Creating corporate profiles and marketing packages for corporate benefits
- Reviewing grant applications
Events
- Preparing for BLO’s annual October Gala
- Providing support for BLO's summer events and outdoor performances
- Auditing BLO’s 2009-2010 Season event files
- Updating event photos, press, collateral pieces and archives
- Begin work on a Boston Venue database (detailing capacity, costs, and fees)
- Researching activities at other opera companies and compiling fundraising ideas for BLO’s BRAVO! group for young professionals
General
- Creating 2009-2010 Season Wrap Report that memorializes the season’s campaigns and events for department reference during new season
- Creating a reference file for the 2010-2011 Season
- Updating Board bios and handbooks
- Updating staff directory
- Additional projects may be developed with supervisor/mentor based on intern’s area of interest
Unpaid internship: Complimentary dress rehearsal passes for the 2010-2011 Season, T-pass, and free registration for Opera 101 sessions offered in appreciation for services rendered.
Requirements:
- Undergrad or graduate student with development/fundraising/communication/arts administration course work preferred.
- Knowledge of classical music, theatre and, specifically, opera a big plus.
- Must be computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office.
- Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills. Attention to detail. Creative independent thinking a plus.
